E-Commerce: Online pictures

Pictures are crucial for selling online but how much should I pay for online photography for my ecommerce site?

Carl Davis is CEO of Dealgroupmedia UK Ltd:
How much you spend on photography will also depend on what you are selling. You need to weigh up the potential revenue that you think your site can achieve when committing to expenditure on website design and photography. You also need to think about the other marketing activity that you are undertaking, both on and offline, and how many visitors you get to your website.

Also, whether you have only an online presence, or also have a retail shop, will influence your decision i.e. if you only have an online presence, then this effectively acts as your shop window and therefore the site design, photography, usability and functionality should be as good as possible.

If you are not marketing your website and do not have the intention to do so, and you have a retail shop resulting in low visitors to your website, I would recommend buying stock photography from a site such as Getty Images - http://www.gettyimages.com/Home.aspx - where the cost of images range from around £25 to £130.

Bespoke photography is definitely worth it if you are selling clothes or anything bespoke. Another option could be to get past customers to write reviews on your product or service and upload their photography. Depending on the website functionality you should be able to review comments and photos and only use those that you are happy with.
