Blog: Money minded Milan Fashion Week kicks off

Dip-dye at Burberry Prorsum

Dip-dye at Burberry Prorsum

The frenzy of catwalks in fashion's commercial capital Milan kick started on Saturday with an unusual but wholly welcome start to proceedings. Plus-size - yes you heard correctly - plus-size brand Elena Miro lit the fuse on what looks certain to be a money-minded series of shows.

Designers were falling back on the inherent strengths of their branded personalities as well as tried and tested trend formulas.

D&G yesterday took the plunge with a maritime-drenched presentation replete with chunky Breton stripes, in your face anchor motifs, high waisted sailor pants and 1920s inspired beachwear.

Christopher Bailey appeared also to have caught the flapper bug as evidenced by Burberry Prorsum's parade of flouncy dresses and the same kind of cloche hats as seen at D&G. Being so renowned for its rainwear, it came as little surprise to see such a focus from Burberry with Bailey reinterpreting the classic look into festival chic cloaks, dip dyed cleverly to give a rainsoaked illusion. Not that we need it here in the UK.
