I came to London two years ago knowing its influence in fashion and how the city, as The Times puts it, “cuts a dash when it comes to global style”. But I didn’t know anybody, and was looking for somewhere to start. I had just wrapped up a fruitful career in television, where I was Senior Producer at Fox (Los Angeles) and then Creative Services Director for NBC (Houston). Alongside my TV career, I also worked for our family business, S.C. Vizcarra, a company based in Manila that my grandmother founded in 1925. We make stunning, hand-woven leather and wicker bags that not many people outside of the Asian market know about. I wanted to change that, and FBC has been great at helping me build steps towards this.
I first heard of FBC from co-founder Alison Whelan, whom I did some work for. A few weeks later, she asked me to join, and needless to say, the answer was a resounding yes. In no time, I was able to use my skills in fashion and television shooting and editing videos for FBC members such as Martyn Roberts & John Walford for Vauxhall Fashion Scout, and for koodos.com (Miriam Lahage). One of S.C. Vizcarra’s bags worn by Courtney Blackman, co-founder of FBC and head of Forward PR, was photographed by Vogue.com during one of FBC’s meetings, and the company was featured by FBC committee member and renowned stylist Rebekah Roy in her widely read blog. Not bad for a little company all the way from the Philippines! All thanks to FBC.
A few months ago, I was asked to be the membership coordinator for FBC. Now, my duties include liaising with current and potential members, updating the club’s growing directory and greeting everyone at the door during meetings. I’m looking forward to next week’s meeting and to hearing DailyCandy’s London editor Malika Dalamal. And of course, I also enjoy the face-to-face networking that happens after the talk. Send me an email if you have any questions about next week’s meeting or about FBC in general, whether you’re a member or thinking of becoming one, I’d love to hear from you!
