Following its Tokyo debut on Saturday, Swedish high street chain H&M has today launched its Comme des Garcons tie-up into selected UK stores.
With collaborations ranging from edgy design duo Victor and Rolf through to pop queen Madonna and Girls Aloud favourite Roberto Cavalli, H&M is never predictable in its choice of fashion partners in crime. This one however seems, from the outset, the most far fetched, with H&M's fluoro hoodies and skinny jeans making way for a collection which taps into designer Rei Kawakubo's love of the flamboyant and offbeat.
The wearability for the twenty-something on the street might be debateable when it comes to ruffled and ribboned gothic dresses which look like they could have walked straight out of Helena Bonham Carter's wardrobe, but despite that, this is a collection which will whoosh a gust of fresh air through an increasingly homogenous high street. For girls, layering is key, with Victoriana ruffle sleeved blouses and mannish spotty blouses teamed with drop crotch pants, tuxedo jackets and two toned jersey tops with asymmetric hems, while outerwear winner is a double breasted military coat. For guys, polka dots again make the biggest statement, on splodgy shirts and monochrome shorts, as slim fit suiting and simple black trenches offer a more wearable aesthetic.
Prices start from £15 and go up to £200.
