Surrounded by pattern cutting and sewing from childhood, Nancy Van Ostren knew she wanted to be a fashion designer. Whilst training at the London College of Fashion, she worked for Zandra Rhodes before graduating in 2002 and going on to work for the likes of; Jasper Conran, Burberry and Victoria Beckham’s ‘dVb’ denim and sunglasses collections. In 2010 she launch her own label!
What inspired you to do your own collection?
I have always wanted to do my own collection, ever since I was a little girl and my grandma was teaching me how to sew! After graduating from college (8 years ago now!) I felt that it was really important to get great experience with design houses before setting up on my own, and that’s exactly what I did!

What was the most challenging aspect about launching your solo collection?
It was all very challenging! I suppose the most challenging to me was after the samples were made and doing photoshoots, lookbooks, website and sales. I was never involved on this side before and it was all very new to me!
How would you describe your collection?
My AW10 collection is inspired by my favorite sci fi movies when I was a kid, such as Barbarella and Flash Gordon. I love the way the women are so powerful in these movies and I wanted to portray that in my clothes. The key word is definitely ‘fembot’! I would say the collection is unique but has a great commercial value to it also.
How many pieces are in your collection?
15 pieces.

What brand would you sit along side?
Clements Ribeiro, Rick Ownes, Giles, Nathan Jenden
Where do you do your manufacturing?
I keep all my manufacturing in the UK
What is your price point trade/rrp?
Wholesale is from £90 - £415
Retail is £180 - £825

Where do you exhibit?
TBC at the moment, but I’m through to the presentation stage for a few places, which is really exciting.

What plans/ direction do you have for SS11
My SS11 collection is inspired by my nightmares from when I was a kid. I always go back to my inner child! The cut is strong but with a feminine touch and the colours are bold yet graceful too.
Nancy will be exibiting in September at Vauxhall Fashion Scout.
