Last week I was quite shocked to see the weather turn and switch on a seasonal timer. One minute it was all sunny and summery and then bam, rain, cold wind and it was noticeably dark early on. So tucked up at home listening to the wind howl, I watched the recent ITV adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The bleak moors and stormy skies were a pathetic fallacy for Cathy and Heathcliff’s turmoil and that coupled with the dark costume palette, I couldn’t help being reminded of the AW09 Chanel ads.
Either Karl Lagerfeld and the ITV Head of Programming have been swopping notes, or there is a collective mood emerging, indicative of our current climate. Serious, grave, modest and thoughtful has been visually translated into black and white photographs of high-buttoned jackets and sweeping skirts that cover up any fanciful feelings as we buckle down and get on with surviving the recession.
