Pop Up Shops- The opportunities

Posted by:

27 October, 2010

This year especially has seen an outbreak in pop up shops so TFN gathered at Sanctum Soho house to discuss the opportunities, risks, rewards and actions of taking up temporary lettings in the UK.

The Pop Ups demand comes from our culture of high speed shopping, short attention spans and the hunger consumers (and the industry) have for something new. So over the past years’ we’ve seen brands, designers, and e-tailors popping up all over the country.

Our evening circuited around the ins and outs of hosting a pop up shop, we discussed, when, where, how and why your business should take up temporary retail.

Just like one of our panellist, Lauren (CEO of Glassworksstudio.com) being a new business her reasoning was simple-marketing! Lauren popped up for two weeks in central London and due to demand stayed for two months. Why was Lauren so successful? Quite simply her creativity. Lauren themed her shop into a home from home, so when customers came in and shopped in her virtual fashion world, they felt at home and more comfortable purchasing.

Ross McKay, Head of Property at the Trafford Centre (our second panellist) is particularly interested in brands and designers that bring something different. He describes how landlords look for tenant mix when they’re considering taking on a pop up shop, does in compliment their current tenants, will it draw in custom, or is it pr-able?

Across the country empty shops sit lonely, perfectly equipped for business to open up and host temporary retail space. With established retailers such as the Trafford Centre offering six-eight week temporary rented units, this is a unique and one off “poportunity” for retailers to experiment with the highstreet.
