John Lewis stems falling sales

John Lewis has halted its run of poor sales after posting a 5.9% rise over the week to July 12.

The department store retailer, which last Friday posted its eighth decline in nine weeks, saw sales jump by 5.9% to £55.2 million.

Around half of stores were up on the same week last year, while the out-of-town branches, which have suffered in recent weeks, pulled back.

The clothing directive continued its strong performance with fashion sales up 13.9%. Womenswear sales rose by 16% and other categories also performed well.

Nat Wakely, John Lewis director of selling operations for region A, said: "Indeed, all fashions, be they for women, men or children, performed strongly with new transitional fashion stocks selling very well across all branches alongside our Clearance offer.

"All in all an encouraging week and one where we can have confidence that our assortment and service offer are well placed to make the most of future trading opportunities"
