John Lewis sales fell by almost 10% over the week to November 8, as a combination of the economic uncertainty and poor weather hit trade.

The drop in sales to £57.78 million over the week was the eighth consecutive sales decline at John Lewis.

However fashion sales at John Lewis rose 4.4%.

John Lewis said it had seen strong handbag sales due to some "keen pricing" and that meant that women's accessories were up against the previous year.

Nat Wakely, John Lewis director of retail operations region A, said:  "The economic climate continues to be difficult, but we hope with last week's interest rate cut, together with the news of our own investments in the future in both Bluewater and Dublin, and our new TV advertising campaign, we will continue to outperform a difficult market. Certainly, our progress on our customer service and availability measures should give us confidence that we are well set for the Christmas peak."
