Junior fashion editor Graeme Moran picks his best bits from the second day of LC:M.
Jonathan Saunders’ presentation revealed a rainbow riot of warm winter colours deftly mixed together, signalling a colourful mood for autumn 13.
As always there was strong knitwear and more covetable outerwear options this season – the striped styles particularly piquing our interest. Prints continued to draw on last season’s ombre effect, while new paint-splattered camoflague options stood out. A commercial hit for those brave enough to stray from black and navy.
Christopher Shannon’s autumn 13 offering was darker and moodier than we’ve come to expect, and was just as good for it.
The new knitwear was the hero of the show, ranging from panelled cable knits and waffles through to fun mismatched graphic elements patchworked together, alongside gaffer-taped jeans, lashings of leather and signature shirts. Shannon knows what he’s doing and once again did it well, while also introducing looks for girls for the first time too.
Other highlights include exaggerated shoulders, oversized outerwear and pinstripe-play to mark Alexander McQueen’s menswear return to London.
Margaret Howell went for a winter coastal look, with Breton stripes, beautiful boat neck roll top jumpers and smartly turned out seafarer outerwear. The bonkers knitwear kings and queen Sibling went bigger and bolder than ever, with pumped up scarves and mittens coming in super oversized shapes, balanced with top notch jumpers and cardigans you can expect to see in more stores come next autumn. The perfect balance of fun catwalk show and sellable, wearable clothes.
Orange continued to be a key colour, bringing zesty pops to Jonathan Saunders and a rusty version at Margaret Howell.
Elsewhere pea coats pushed through as an outerwear favourite with a lovely cowl neck version seen at Oliver Spencer, alongside the parkas that cropped up at Martine Rose and yesterday’s Topman Design.
Richard James’s decadent Café Royal setting wins best venue for its grandeur, the perfect setting for James’ commercial suited and booted style.
The third and final day sees J.W. Anderson, Matthew Miller and Tom Ford reveal their latest offerings.
