Jones Bootmaker, 43 Bridlesmith Gate
KEY LOOKS: 6
Women's fashion looks are interpreted to suit an older demographic such as low-heeled patent Mary Janes. There are four ankle boot styles, brogue heeled shoe boots and patent courts too. A Germanic flat mock croc boot works less well. Men get Hugo Boss brogues mixed with red rub off formals, Rock n Roll pointed Chelsea boots and chisel toe formals.
MERCHANDISE MIX: 5
Most of the offer is essentially tried and tested classics with a premium feel. Women's makes up around 60% of the mix. Men's is split three ways – one third own label, one third branded formals and one third branded casuals which come via the likes of Timberland and Merrell. Branded women's comes from Camper and Ugg.
STORE APPEAL: 6
A good looking store which is only slightly let down by some odd quirks including a handbag carousel display unit positioned right inside the window which obstructs shopper's views into the store. What sounds like Jones Bootmaker radio is broadcasting special deals on shoe trees during our visit – this is more Debenhams than debonair.
VALUE FOR MONEY: 6
A blanket promotion of £20 off all men's and women's boots gives shoppers a steal on Uggs at £120 for ankle styles and £150 on classic talls. Against £200 plus Hugo Boss styles, men's own label looks reasonable with Chelsea boots at £140 after discount. Women's penny loafers are £75, biker boots are £90 and fold over shot boots are £80.

| Jemma Gueno, 22, trainee teacher, Jersey I love their red patent Mary Jane's but the boots are too plain. The staff are really friendly though and they put you at ease. | ![]() |
