Gola focuses on opening stores internationally as it shuts its Carnaby Street store

Sports footwear brand Gola is to shut its Carnaby Street store as it looks to focus on international markets.

The brand, which has had its Carnaby Street store for five years, will close the store after Easter, with the exact date yet to be confirmed.

Tony Evans, managing director of footwear brand house Jacobson Group, which owns Gola, said the company decided to close the store as it explores opening pop-up stores in other countries.

“We feel that the Carnaby Street store has served its purpose in terms of building brand awareness, particularly among tourists visiting London,” he told Drapers.

“We are pretty happy with our distribution in the UK and we are now looking at international locations in places including New York, as that would open up different markets for us.”

Evans added that there was no timescale on the opening of international stores as yet but that it was an option that the company was “actively exploring”.

Gola is among several brands, including Dockers and Lacoste, to have recently closed its store at Shoreditch pop-up mall Boxpark.
