Asos bids to overtake Next

Etailer Asos has vowed to overtake Next as the UK's biggest online fashion retailer over the next two to three years.

Asos chief executive Nick Robertson told The Times newspaper that his goal is to "overtake Next in terms of traffic and that [the business is] increasingly moving towards that".

Robertson added: "The opportunity exists for someone to be the dominant player in the fashion space. It will be Asos and it should be Asos."

Asos' trading statement on Wednesday is expected to reveal a sales growth of about 90% over the summer.

Asos said its share of the online clothing market is now almost 5%, placing it above Topshop and New Look. Next's share is 7%.

Robertson said: "The barriers that were there, things like wanting to try something on before buying, seem to be disappearing by the day."
