Independent clothing and footwear retailers lost market share in the 12 week period ended July 20 according to research by TNS Worldpanel Fashion.
TNS Worldpanel Fashion said that the overall clothing, footwear and accessories market grew by 3% during the three month period, and that this was driven by both volume and value.
However independent retailers lost 0.2% share over the period, giving them 7.4% of the overall market. Other losers over the three months were general stores, which lost 0.6% market share to 12%; discounters, which lost 0.6% to 10.7%; and sports shops which lost 0.8% to 9.2%.
Fashion multiples were the biggest winners over the period gaining a whopping 1.2%, taking their combined share to 27.8% of the market. Etailers gained 0.5% to 1.9% of the market, supermarkets gained 0.4% to 7.6%, mail order chalked up a 0.2% gain to 7.2% and footwear shops made a surprise gain of 0.1% to 5.8%. Department stores also gained 0.1% to 8%.
TNS said that average spend per shopper was up 7% over the period, driven by womenswear and kidswear. However the research firm said that while consumers were shopping more frequently, they were spending less per trip.
