BSSA chief executive John Dean calls for retailer input

The British Shops and Stores Association (BSSA) is calling for input from independent non-food retailers for its quarterly sales monitor.

BSSA's sales monitor is aimed at providing an alternative snapshot of the health of the high street from the point of view of smaller businesses.

The sales monitor was launched last year using data from BSSA members and non-members. It does not include sales returns from multiples or businesses operating in the food sector, and indicates consumer spending and retail performance by sector and region for independent non-food retailers.

The BSSA has around 4,000 members with a combined turnover of £3 billion.

Chief executive John Dean said: "This sales monitor of quarterly performance is a key element in the BSSA's campaign to draw attention to the plight of the high street and the very real challenges facing many businesses. This more accurate representation will enable us to comment authoritatively on the performance of the high street from he small and independent retailer's perspective."
