Young fashion multiples will draw on the Victoriana, punk and folk trends shown on the international catwalks in their autumn 08 ranges as they try to tempt cautious shoppers to spend on clothing.

Retailers told Drapers there were many commercial looks that could easily translate to the high street, including gothic styling, plaids, leather, lace and fur. Vibrant red and orange are expected to be the key colours.

Gucci's show at Milan Fashion Week won over New Look trend director Barbara Horspool, and the label's bohemian rock vibe tuned into a New Look trend story. "I loved the Russian overtone," said Horspool. "It had a little bit of theatre, and we have done a look called Tsar Rock. Another key look was D&G's plaids. We've also done a Dickensian punky rock story with an underworld twist."

River Island design manager Miranda Kirwan said nothing had surprised her team in terms of trends, and that the catwalks had confirmed key looks.  "Gucci, D&G and Pollini in Milan looked really good," she said. "The Culture Club vibe came back and Anna Sui was a bit folky – a lot of designers were trying to get back to couture looks and there was lots of neck and shoulder detail. Embellishment always works well. Victoriana will also come back."

Oasis design director Nadia Jones said: "They didn't look like recession catwalks – it looked vibrant and eclectic, and fabrics were exciting. Our customers love colour and print, which we will cater for, and a clean minimalist undercurrent came through. Flame red was strong and we feel good about camel and chocolate shades. Dresses will be key and checks and tartan will be a big trend."
