Sainsbury's reported like-for-like sales of 4.1% (excluding petrol) for the 12 weeks to March 22, boosted by "strong growth" in its non-food business.
Sainsbury's said total sales excluding petrol for the period rose 5.1% and full year like-for-like sales excluding petrol grew 3.9%.
Chief executive Justin King said: "We continue to see strong growth from non-food sales following the investment we've made in developing the range, establishing the supporting infrastructure and increasing the space dedicated to this part of our offer. Going forward, non-food has significant growth potential as we continue to implement our plans."
During the quarter Sainsbury's opened a new store in Alnwick, extended its store at Bradford on Avon and refurbished a further 13 supermarkets.
Sainsbury's also said it was investing £273 million in a £1.2 billion property joint venture with British Land which will see it develop and extend some of its stores.
