House of Fraser kicked off spring discounting on the high street this weekend and rival Debenhams will hold its first spring promotional event this week.

Debenhams will run a three-day Spring Spectacular beginning on Wednesday and offering up to 25% off everything in its stores and at www.debenhams.com.

House of Fraser ran its Spring Event for four days up to yesterday offering House of Fraser cardholders up to 15% off full price merchandise. Its event was likely timed to coincide with pay weekend.

Compshop, which monitors promotional activity on the high street, said that 15% of retailers had a Sale this weekend, while 22% had a combination of full price and discounted merchandise. The majority of retailers, 63%, traded prime.

Some fashion retailers are keen to clear stock ahead of the key Easter weekend, which falls on March 21-24, when they hope to drive as much full-margin product as possible. Other retailers told Drapers they hoped to get two bites of the cherry this Easter because the some school holidays would fall after the actual Easter weekend.

...but these companies now factor the discount into the 'full selling price'.
To differentiate oneself from the High St, chains etc don't ever have a sale.
Clear insitu anything slow and write off any duds or leftovers.
Running a full price shop (and avoiding upsetting loyal FP customers who see their purchases marked down a few wks later) is much more fun.
Nicer customer base too.............

Madness. In reality, the season has only just begun. The consumer is never again going to be educated into paying full price if promotions like these continue. They devalue product with the resultant long term effect that consumers sitting tight waiting for the next promotion.
