George could axe 450 jobs

George at Asda could axe up to 450 jobs following a reorganisation of its clothing brand.

Asda plans to streamline its warehousing facilities from four warehouses to three, with plans to close its base in Ince, near Wigan, which the supermarket says is "too small".

Asda logistics director Doug Gurr told The Mail on Sunday: "We are at an early stage and we have only just begun consultation with our staff."

Gurr added that the process could take up to six months.

Asda has two warehouses within a 20-mile radius where some staff could be offered alternative roles.

At the moment, each warehouse stocks different clothing lines and distributes on a national basis, but Asda plans to stock its full clothing products in the remaining three warehouses, with one warehouse responsible for the North, another for the Midlands and a third for the South.

Gurr said the change would bring George in line with the rest of the business and greatly reduce the distance each item has to travel.
