Bluewater shopping centre recorded a 10% rise in fashion sales in May against the previous year while footfall also rose 2.8% during the month.

Bluewater said that footfall was boosted by the two Bank Holidays during the month.

Bluewater general manager Andrew Parkinson said: "The wet weather and continuing tales of gloom about the credit crunch and outlook for the UK economy failed to dampen consumers' desire to visit Bluewater, and crucially to indulge in retail therapy. Anecdotally, guests tell us that spending time at Bluewater was a welcome escape from the poor weather experienced during the month, and the figures underline the fact that consumers' attitudes remain undaunted. Guests certainly remain prepared to indulge in strong consumer spending in fashion, jewellery and accessories with a high number booking holidays, notably for next season skiing and cruises."
