Next is suing Asda over claims that the supermarket's fashion brand George has copied its clothing designs.
According to The Times newspaper, Next is suing Asda in the High Court, claiming that the supermarket has infringed its design rights on five items of kidswear. These items include boys' lined jeans, light glory jeans, retro bomber jackets, cork-bed sandals and navy trekker sandals.
Asda said: "We pride ourselves on the quality of our design. We have received proceedings from Next and we are currently looking into these allegations."
Next declined to comment.
This is the second time that Next has issued legal proceedings against a rival, after taking Home Retail group, which owns Argos, to court over claims that it copied designs in its children's bedroom furniture range.
