John Lewis has been voted the UK's favourite retailer in a consumer survey conducted by retail analyst Verdict Research.
Verdict's Consumer Satisfaction Index 2008, which polled 6,000 shoppers across the UK, found that the department store was "more highly regarded" than any of its competitors.
John Lewis also topped the poll in the clothing, homeware and electricals categories.
In clothing, H&M came in second place, ahead of George at Asda, while TK Maxx grabbed the top spot in footwear, followed by George at Asda and Marks & Spencer.
The survey asked shoppers to rate retailers in terms of range, price, convenience, quality, service, ambience, facilities and layout.
Verdict warned that retail growth would be slower in 2008, at 2.6%, compared to 3.7% last year.
Verdict consulting director Neil Saunders said: "The fact is that consumers today have more choice than ever before. If a retailer gets it wrong it's very easy for a shopper to go elsewhere. It's no longer sufficient to pay lip service to 'keeping the customer satisfied' - it has to be a philosophy placed at the heart of a retail business."
