Liam Fahy has won the first ever Fashion Fringe footwear design competition.

Fahy, who was also the recipient of the Drapers footwear designer of the year award in 2006, has won a 10 month paid apprenticeship with footwear designer Rupert Sanderson after he was judged to be the best entrant by the panel which was headed by Manolo Blahnik.

Fahy, a graduate from De Montfort University, said: "This is such an incredible opportunity for any young shoe designer, and it has only just sunk in that I have won."

The Fashion Fringe Shoes programme has been designed to provide the winner with exposure to all aspects of the luxury shoe business from design and development, to dealing with the press and wholesale account management.

Fashion Fringe's creative director Colin McDowell added: "Shoes are the most exciting area in fashion today.  The originality and ingenuity of the six finalists was of an exceedingly high order."

Other judges on the panel included Paula Reed, style director of Grazia; Sebastian Manes, director of accessories at Selfridges; and shoe designer Rupert Sanderson.
