JJB Sports said retail sales fell 2%

JJB Sports said like-for-like sales fell 1.2% for the 12 weeks ended July 20 and warned the second half of the year would be "very challenging".

JJB Sports said the figure was made up of a 2% fall in sales at its retail stores and a 5.9% increase in sales at its health clubs.

JJB Sports said that where it had refurbished stores it had seen a strong increase in like-for-like sales. JJB management said that the company's future trading position would continue to strengthen as the refurbishment programme rolls out further.

However JJB Sports said it was cautious about the outlook for the remainder of the year because of the difficult trading climate.

JJB Sports non-executive chairman Roger Lane-Smith said: "I am confident that the executive board are taking the right decisions to build a strong foundation for the future of JJB and to get us through, what looks like being, a very challenging second half to the year."
