John Lewis sales dipped by 4.2% as The Olympics and summer exam results kept customers away from the shops.
John Lewis said sales for the week to August 16 hit £47.16 million and added that trade was subdued.
Sales at all of John Lewis' branches bar London Oxford Street were down. Oxford Street saw its sales rise 6%.
However fashion sales rose by 1.3% over the week, posting the best product category performance over the week.
Where both branded and own-brand womenswear were sold together, assortments posted double-digit growth. Women's footwear also performed well. Men's fashion sales were dominated by sports and branded casualwear.
Simon Fowler head of internal communications at John Lewis said: "More changeable weather this week should help encourage an increase in shopping activity and this, coupled with the arrival of plenty of new autumn stock, will certainly provide plenty of inspiration and choice."
