Jacques Vert saw like-for-like sales fall back 7% for the first 21 weeks of the year beginning April 27.

Jacques Vert said in a statement ahead of its annual general meeting that the performance was broadly in line with position announced on July 8 at the time of the preliminary results when like-for-like sales were down 5.9% for the first 10 weeks of the year.

However Jacques Vert said gross margin was slightly ahead over the 21 week period.

Jacques vert chairman Steve Bodger said: "As has been widely reported, the trading environment since the time of the preliminary announcement has worsened; however, we have already taken action to reduce the effects of the consumer downturn. our position is also strengthened by having a robust balance sheet and cash reserves, although we remain custious for the remainder of the year and can see no reason for any improvement in the economic environment in the short term."

Jacques Vert owns the Jacques Vert, Windsmoor, Planet and Precis retsil brands.
