Donatella Versace is in a sweet and playful mood for spring 09, despite the news of economic doom and gloom all around.

Her catwalk presentation rounded off yesterday's offerings at Milan Fashion Week and was the last big Italian show of the season. A parade of short sweet dresses with full skirts or ruffled strips in sugared almond shades of mauve, sky blue, coral and canary yellow were preceded by classic black, white and glittering metallics.

Surface interest came through on oversized origami-style appliqué hearts, illustrations from fashion favourite Julie Verhoeven and giant crystal clusters.

The Versace heartland of red carpet gowns was not neglected, with slinky draped styles in mauve or tobacco silk jersey and playful multicoloured maxi dresses giving plenty of eveningwear options.
