Nigel Beale, the great grandson of the founder of Beales, is to step down from his board position after 37 years at the end of October but he has been made honorary President of the department store.

Nigel Beale will step down as non-executive director on October 31 when he will take up the position of President of the company.

Beales chairman Mike Killingley said: "This honorary [President] position has been created to enable us to maintain Nigel's connection with the company to which he has made such an enormous contribution over more than 40 years, 37 of them as an executive director, chairman, and latterly a non-executive director."

Separately Beales has appointed Keith Edelman as a non-executive director effective immediately. Edelman replaces Alison Richards, who died last year.

Edelman was chief executive of Storehouse between 1993 and 1999, when it comprised of Bhs and Mothercare. Most recently he was managing director of Arsenal Holdings between 2000 and May this year.

Killingley said: "We are delighted that Keith Edelman has agreed to join the Beales board. His breadth of general business and retail experience will be of great value to the business."
