Primark scoops top gong at Drapers Fashion Awards

Primark scooped the top gong at the Drapers Fashion Awards, while its founder Arthur Ryan was recognised for his contribution to the industry.

Credited with reinventing the value sector, Primark’s notoriously media-shy founder Ryan took home the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award, while the company he set up was crowned Larger Multiple of the Year.

The awards, which were attended by 900 from across the fashion retail industry, took place at Grosvenor House on Wednesday (November 21).

Young fashion chain River Island won Retailer of the Year as voted for by the readers of InStyle magazine.

The chain fought off tough competition from nominees including Zara, Cos, Reiss, Topshop, Whistles, H&M and Warehouse in the first ever collaboration between Drapers and InStyle.

Asos picked up a duo of awards, taking home both Growing Retailer of the Year and Larger Etailer of the Year.

Bag specialist Cambridge Satchel Company picked up the Smaller Etailer of the Year Award.

Independent retailers flew the flag for the high street, with London indie Trunk Clothiers scooping Premium Retailer of the Year and Dorset indie Yard winning Best New Business of the Year.

Young Fashion Brand went to Little Mistress, with Barbour taking the Menswear title. Womenswear Brand of the Year went to Selected Femme.

Other notable winners on the night included luxury British brand Burberry, which won the gong for International Retailer of the Year.

Drapers editor Caroline Nodder said: “Winning a Drapers Fashion Award is a real mark of excellence, and our winners this year have been judged by a panel of the fashion trade’s biggest names so they should be especially proud of themselves and their teams for that fantastic achievement.”

  • As a former editor of Drapers and a judge for the independent retailer categories of this year's awards, I am astonished and disappointed to see no mention of the independent retailer winners, Javelin of Bury St Edmunds for womenswear and Number Eight in Stirling for menswear, in this report. Both stores are members of the Fashion Association of Britain (www.fashionassociationofbritain.co.uk). It wasn't so long ago that these prizes were the most important in the whole of the Drapers Awards list. Any one would think that Drapers doesn't regard the independent sector as interesting or relevant any more. Must do better!

  • Couldn't agree more with Eric comments. Let's celebrate inspiring indies more (thought that was part of Drapers ethos) and give them the profile they deserve. God knows the high street needs a vibrant independent fashion sector. After all it is not as though the Primarks, Asos, H & M etc of this world are short of publicity is it!

  • Not one to be a contrarian but I could not care less about the independat stories on Drapers and often find them to be irrelevant, pointless filler.

  • Indeed Eric, the perfunctory interest in Inspiring Indies does somewhat appear as box-ticking charade a great deal of the time.....a little disillusioning to be honest. But onwards and forwards we go...
