John Lewis staff are to receive a bonus of 17% this year

John Lewis staff are to receive a bonus of 17% this year - higher than the amount previously rumoured.

All John Lewis Partnership staff employed on January 31 of this year will receive the bonus.

At the event this morning, Oxford Street store managing director Simon Fowler said the system was “a fairer share of capitalism” and praised the staff for their work in bolstering the partnership’s results, which were revealed later on in the day.

The staff cheered and applauded as the over-sized envelope was torn open by two long-standing members of staff, revealing the figure. It equates to nine weeks’ pay, and the average partner will take home nearly £4,000.

However, there were several protesters outside the central London flagship store, calling for the cleaning staff to be included as partners.

Citizens UK - an alliance of institutions lobbying for fair pay - is calling for cleaning wages to be increased from the minimum standard of £6.19 to a living wage level of £7.45 outside London and £8.55 inside.
