Like-for-like retail sales rose 1.4% in June when fashion sales were boosted by the hot sunny weather and high street discounting.
According to the BRC KPMG Retail Sales Monitor, warm weather helped sales at some clothing retailers and the figures also benefited from weak comparitives because last June had been wet.
Fashion retailers also saw trade boosted by Sales and high street discounting.
Within clothing, kidswear was the strongest performer, with womenswear selling better than menswear. Casualwear was more popular than formalwear, with summer styles selling best.
Footwear sales were boosted by demand for sandals and other summer styles as well as clearance Sales.
Total retail sales for June rose 3.2%.
Non-food, non-store sales, which includes internet and home shopping sales, were 16.8% higher than in June last year.
British Retail Consortium director general Stephen Robertson said: “June’s sunshine gave overall sales a much needed boost. Many clothing clearance Sales coincided nicely with the upsurge in demand for summerwear that came from the good weather.”
For the three months from April to June, non-food sales dipped 0.7% on a like-for-like basis compared to the same period last year. Total retail sales fell 1.2% over the three month period.
