Online sales soar during July

  • Comment

Online sales surged to £4.2bn in July as shoppers showed signs of renewed confidence.

According to the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, July recorded around 15.7% more online sales than June, a 16.8% year-on-year rise.

New summer lines, heavy discounting and promotions have been encouraging factors for customers in the last six months. The clothing, footwear and accessories sector gained an 18% month-on-month and a 17% year-on-year hike.

IMRG director of information Tina Spooner said: “Online retail continues to outperform the high street with e-retail growth in July exceeding the yearly growth seen in July 2008. Fashion and electrical retailers reported strong growth and these remain the key drivers of the UK e-retail market.”

Clothing, footwear and accessories continued to be the fastest growing sector, up 18% month-on-month and 17% year-on-year. IMRG estimated that £429m was spent on clothing, footwar and accessories in July.
