Firstly Holly, tell us briefly what being a Website Manager for Rokit entails?
The main focus is getting new product onto the site, as we are a vintage clothing company we only have one of everything so it is important to keep a consistent flow of fresh items online. We also get a lot of requests for press loans and features and we publish a monthly newsletter.
Why did Rokit choose to launch a transactional store instead of using eBay?
Rokit is fortunate in that it has been a well established name amongst vintage lovers and press for a long time now so as an already recognised brand it seemed a natural progression to launch our own website. Also having our own site gives us more freedom over what we sell and how we showcase it, the problem with eBay from a customer point of view is that it can be very vast making it harder to find what you’re looking for and of course once you’ve found it you might get out bid!
Is the website development in house or outsourced? How do you find this works?
The website development is outsourced with a Surrey based company. If you are able to have in house development it does make it much easier for changes to happen quickly as it is vital to have regular communication.
What piece of advice would you give to boutiques launching a website for the first time?
You must have good quality product to sell and a consistent supply, with vintage clothing and accessories the more unique each piece is the more desirable it is. Merchandise and showcase your items well as you would expect to find in a shop so that customers can easily find what they’re looking for.
And finally, many online fashion stores are becoming publishers by branching out into content creation – will Rokit be following this trend with a blog or video features?
Yes definitely, fashion blogs have become very popular and vintage in particular is featuring more and more. Blogging is something we have already started to get involved with and we’ll certainly be doing more of. We also have a monthly newsletter which you can sign up to on our website where we feature current fashion trends with a vintage twist.
