Charlotte McHardy
Managing director, United Clothing
“I was spotted on the shop floor at [now defunct department store] Simpsons in Piccadilly and promoted to assistant buyer and then moved over to the wholesale side with [fashion agent] Robert de Keyser. From there I went to Designer Room, Paul Costelloe and later Olsen. I made it through sheer hard work. I made sure I knew my subject and put in extra hours to be ahead of the game. I never stopped at my job, but knew how it fitted into the mechanics of the business and how I made a difference. I also always had an eye on my own progression.
People should never think that life owes you something. You have to put in if you want to take out, because nothing comes for free. But, as I was once advised, it is really important to respect other people because you cannot succeed on your own.”
