Jo Tyers, 30
Group head of merchandising, Alexon Group
Jo Tyers, group head of merchandising at Alexon, which includes womenswear brands Ann Harvey and Kaliko, describes her role as a “massive, exciting challenge”, but aims to “go on and make a difference.”
Her path started at 18 when she took a role as merchandise administrator at Topman. Assistant merchandiser roles followed at Mothercare and TK Maxx, then over six years as merchandiser and then head of merchandising at Select. After the birth of twins, Tyers joined Bay Trading, formerly part of the Alexon Group, before moving to Alexon as group head of merchandising.
“A real highpoint was when I reached merchandiser level at Select. When you work for a relatively smaller business you get involved in different aspects – that really can accelerate your career,” she says. It is not only her core role that gives Tyers satisfaction, but the development of those around her. “I’m really proud of helping people to develop their confidence by giving them the right support and training. If you put your mind to it and have the drive to achieve it, you can get what you want regardless of your age.”
Mary Anderson-Ford,director of retail, Whitepeak Group, says: “Jo has had a stellar climb up through the ranks, and maintained a friendly approachable style, commented on by all who work with her.”
