McDowell calls for more apprentices

Fashion commentator Colin McDowell has called for more apprenticeship schemes in the industry, echoing the sentiments of many UK fashion manufacturers.

Speaking at Drapers’ Next Generation Academy last week, McDowell said: “We have far too many designers in this country. In other countries, you’re not allowed to start being a designer until you know what you’re doing. Erdem and Christopher Kane are running businesses before they can walk - we need to give them time to breathe and grow.”

In support of Drapers’ Save Our Skills (SOS) campaign, he said: “If colleges closed and companies had real apprenticeships, wouldn’t that be better [for the industry]?”
