Nick Lambert, 26
Assistant buyer, shirts and ties, Topman
At 26 Nick Lambert is already a Topman veteran with six years under his belt. He joined part-time in the Oxford Circus flagship in London and worked his way to supervisor level while he was studying History of Art at London’s Courtauld Institute.
On graduation he joined the business full time. “I knew that I wanted to stay in the business and originally thought I would make my career on the retail side. But I gradually realised that I was really interested in the product, and where it came from and how and why.”
Lambert took a work placement in the buying office, where “my understanding of the job totally opened up,” he says. And when a buyers’ admin assistant role came up in 2006 he went for it.
Promotion to assistant buyer came at the end of 2007 and he has since worked on denim and shorts, smart and tailoring and most recently moved to shirts and ties, where he now has responsibility for ties.
Lambert is focussed on his career. “I’m looking to a junior buying role next and eventually buying and then senior management. I love working for Topman. It is full of passion and an amazing place to work.”
Topman managing director Dave Shepherd says: “Nick is home grown talent for us. And what we see in him is his eye. He understands what our customers want because he thinks like our customers think. He’s definitely buyer material.”
