Bhs - final score: 21/40
Score last year: N/A Verdict: The basics offer is charp and cheerful but there is little else to shout about at Bhs this season | |
Looks - 5There are some examples of trend influence here, such as the broiderie anglaise collars on cotton tops and one or two floral dresses. Necklines are the area most played around with in terms of trends, as lace and crochet features alongside the embroidery styles. The most distinct look is the nautical theme, with a whole section of the store dominated by navy, red and white jersey tops, cropped trousers and shorts. There are some items where its not clear exactly what Bhs's design team was aiming for, such as straight-leg lilac jeans. | Mix - 5Basics lead the way for Bhs, with a good 95% of the store concentrated on daywear and casual product, mainly jersey and cotton tops, with the remaining 5% reserved for a Riveria-branded swimwear section and the bridal range. Combats have been heavily bought into too, and linen also makes a statement, while outerwear is thin on the ground, other than a few light jackets. There is very little denim bearing in mind there are so many casual tops. |
Store - 5Bhs trades on its value and there are huge '2 for £10' signs taking up the whole of one of the two shop front windows. The mannequins at the front of the store are advertising the wedding section, but the impact is rather taken away by all the discount and cheap-as-chips jersey tops surrounding it. Signage is plentiful but confusing, with pointers for cropped jeans placed above a rail of tops and combat trousers. On the positive side, staff were busy discussing how to rearrange the product for easier shopping potential when Drapers visited. | Value - 7Cotton tops with a variety of lace and embroidered necklines weigh in at between £12 and £16, which seems a little pricey compared with Primark. A lot of product is reduced sporadically, as well as there being a huge Sale section, so it is not hard to find value for money. Jeans are slashed from £22 to £17, as are machine washable grey pinstripe trousers. Poly cotton mix trenches seem out of place at £50. In the nautical story, cropped trousers are £22, while belted shorts are a reasonable £20. Tailored separates include £18 for polyester smart trousers. |
