H&M, Level 2, West Quay

There are still a lot of florals kicking around at H&M this season, on jersey T-shirts, tea dresses and even on a suit jacket and pencil skirt combo, which is on the wrong side of cool for the young market. A Chanel-inspired boucle jacket looks like an important piece for the season, but is hidden amongst a dearth of black workwear. Autumn is well catered for with plenty of knitted dresses, and plaid comes through on short wool mix jackets, wide leg wool effect checked trousers, and some red tartan skinny jeans in the younger Divided section.

Outerwear is on a front wall but unfortunately that is the only discernable product category, as the rest of the store appears to be positioned in a rather adhoc manner, save for the big area of workwear on the right hand side of the shop, easily spotted by the rails of black trousers.

Drapers is usually pretty warm blooded, but the changing rooms located in the Divided area of the store felt like being in a freezer and, coupled with a cold marble floor, made trying on clothes pretty offputting. The front half of the store is dedicated to H&M's core product, with the younger Divided range in its own big area at the back, mainly dedicated to slogan T-shirts and skinny denim. There has been some early thought put into merchandising, with gloves already sitting next to winter coats.

Value: 8
An electric blue satin effect shirt dress is good value at £20, while a panelled dress in three shades of grey is a snip at £15. An orange and black cotton gingham cotton shirt with ruffled front and pussy bow is a steal at £8, while music logo T-shirts start from a reasonable £15. A long double breast fuchsia wool mix coat is a little out of the H&M budget at £70.
