Jane Norman - final score: 23/40

Looks - 6Jane Norman tends to avoid buying into the most obvious trends, preferring to stick with what its loyal customer expects, namely body con, bright prints and good colour. Florals do feature, but are less busy than other young fashion interpretations, focusing on oversized leaves and petals rather than the mini repeat patterns seen elsewhere. A royal blue bandeau mini dress demonstrates Jane Norman's body con signature well. Sunset shades of yellow, orange and red are key and are the focus of the window display. | Mix - 6This store is primarily about outfit building, with plenty of product merchandised in layers, such as the ubiquitous ruffled and pintuck bibbed blouses shown under pinafore dresses and waistcoats, to show their versatility. Belts feature heavily where outfits are shown, part of the body-conscious Jane Norman signature. Glam eveningwear is not a particular concern for Jane Norman, yet there is a rail of floor-length satin gowns to cover this extra base, although there are better dressy options on the high street. Both smart and casual trousers are on offer, yet skirts are thin on the ground. |
Store - 6Jane Norman's young fashion direction is obvious from the shop window, where mannequins are dressed in stomach-revealing crossover jersey tops. Product is merchandised by colour rather than trend, with red and lemon both key colour stories. The store is narrow so there is not much room for manouvre, but Drapers visited on a relatively quiet morning so the shopping experience was manageable. A more busy day could cause customers a bit too much effort to try and navigate around the shop easily. | Value - 5Jane Norman's price structure is a bit confusing. A pintucked bibbed blouse has added beading to make it well worth is £28 price tag, yet T-shirts are definitely overpriced at £22. Bootleg jeans are £40, which seems steep as there is a lack of added detail. The midriff-baring crossover jersey tops from the window mannequins are £22, and an all in one ruffled blouse with pinafore dress is good value for £40. A crochet backed cardigan is intricate enough to just about justify its £32 price. In the small eveningwear area a floor-length ivory satin dress with brocade roses woven in is £90. |
