Marks & Spencer - final score: 30/40
Score last year: 29 Verdict: Plenty of fresh takes on trends and well-priced basics combine perfectly to satisfy a wide customer base | |
Looks - 8This is a really impressive presentation by M&S, with trends incorporated across the customer spectrum in fresh and fun ways. Limited offers a younger take, with ruffle-collared pinstripe blouses clearly reflecting the ultra-feminine feel for this spring, while Per Una rocks the floral trend in a multitude of fresh prints. Autograph offers a strong nautical theme of striped jersey tops and cardigans and some safari-themed pieces, such as khaki shirts, while the classic product also buys into more trends than in previous seasons, including high-waisted pencil skirts and oversized bows. | Mix - 7The trend-led product and dresses get it spot on for M&S this season, although some of the basic separates don't live up to the impressive styling of the rest of the offering. There is definite scope for finding something suitable however, with plenty of trousers, jersey tops, shorts and blouses to choose from. Accessories aren't a key focus, but are there to buy into, and the raspberry patent totes look particularly strong at the front of the store. |
Store - 7Big boards of Lily Cole and Erin O'Connor et al show just how far M&S's style credentials have come and help to paper over the cracks of the shopfit's old age, including the scuffed floors and rickety-looking clothing rails. There is some confusion over Limited product hanging on Autograph hangers, but in general the ranges are easily discernable from each other in both product signature and signage. Mannequins at the front of the store show some basic product as well as Limited and Per Una, and this is important for the loyal customer who still wants to buy into classic M&S. | Value - 8Product is significantly cheaper than nearby Debenhams, and much more trend-friendly. For Limited, a broderie anglaise smock top comes in at £25, a lilac floral print slouchy vest is £20, a cute grey pinafore sits well at £40 and a gold studded waistcoat is a steal at £20. In Per Una, a painterly lined polyester dress is good value at £40, as is a Gucci-inspired yellow, black and white floral A-line skirt at the same price, although a burnt orange swing jacket with oversized plastic buttons pushes the customer a little at £45. Autograph offers £40 for wool trousers and £35 for linen versions. |
