Zara, Level 1, West Quay

The younger Trafaluc area has hit the trend nail on the head, with plaid kilts attached to black sleeveless roll necks, furry suede gilets and dresses embroidered with bright folk motifs. It is ahead of its time with drop crotch trousers which are set to be big for spring 09, while the mainline is a little more classic rather than trend-driven, although it has some good structured dresses which will appeal to Zara's more sophisticated consumer. There are some nice sports luxe pieces in the form of sheeny dresses.

Zara is not one of the best segmented stores so it is difficult to see where smart daywear ends and work attire begins, or whether the retailer just intends for them to be interchangeable. There is a decent dose of outerwear options, from double breasted wool military jackets through to scallop bottomed length coats.

This store has the clean Zara aesthetic that you would expect, with marble floors, silver edged display areas and some neatly folded product. There is loads of space in this store for browsing, possibly a little too much – more product could be shown without the shopper feeling cramped. Easy listening pop on the speakers and helpful staff make for a pleasant user experience.

Coloured V-necks are a great £9. A sheer button down dress with polka dot and paisley print is not quite worth the £69 price tag despite the interesting panelled prints, but a similarly printed top with puff sleeves is a more reasonable £29. A lined broiderie anglaise dress is a more wearable option to lace for the demure customer, and is a good £49. The ubiquitous gilet comes in £30 and £35 options.
