Last night's Oscar gowns underlined the subdued sartorial flavour evident at the BAFTAs two weeks ago, with red and black evening dresses the populist choice.
But who wore the best gown of the evening?
Marion Cotillard, who picked up the best actress award for La Vie En Rose, wore a white gown with mermaid fishtail skirt and fish scale detailing by Jean Paul Gaultier.
Anne Hathaway was resplendent in a red, one-shoulder Marchesa dress with 10-carat diamond earrings.
Cameron Diaz wore a pale pink, off-the-shoulder Christian Dior dress with Bulgari jewellery.
While Dame Helen Mirren, who presented Daniel Day-Lewis with the best actor gong, was one of the stars of the evening with her red Georges Chakra floor-length gown.
Penelope Cruz wore a black, floor-length, layered Chanel dress which was rather more successful than Tilda Swinton's gown of choice - a black one shoulder number by Lanvin.
