Gucci is as Gucci does: commercial, commercial, commercial. The Italian mega-brand kicked off yesterday's Milan Fashion Week proceedings with a parade of vibrant shrunken-silhouette suits with designer Frida Giannini's signature tapered, neat trousers sitting just above the ankle.

Sharp shorts and belted safari jackets continued the structured feel, but mini kaftans in geometric print chiffon and voluminous draped evening gowns ramped up the glamour quotient. The one shoulder and halterneck styles were dramatic in their simplicity, either mono-colour draped silk jersey or horizontal striped billowing chiffon.

From the exotic palette of cobalt, spearmint, violet and vermillion to the ultra-luxe parachute silk sportswear, Frida Giannini's offering was an optimistic but saleable rainbow in downbeat, grey economic climate.
