Spend on clothing fell by 0.9% year on year in January, according to data from Barclaycard – the fourth consecutive month of decline.
Barclaycard is developing a mobile phone-based system that would allow customers to pay for products simply using the camera on their smartphone, in a move heralding a further shift away from cash-based retail.
The number of contactless transactions made by Barclaycard customers more than trebled in 2015, thanks in part to the rise in the maximum spend on contactless cards to £30 in September.
