As if building an etail giant on track to pass €3.5bn (£3bn) in annual sales in just over eight years was not enough, Schneider and fellow co-founder Robert Gentz have bigger plans for the Berlin-based company: to establish Zalando as a network for brands and stores for customers all over Europe.

Under this “platform strategy”, Zalando partnered with the Adidas store at Berlin Tauentzienstrasse in Germany to allow shoppers to order in-store stock through Zalando’s ZipCart app in June. It piloted the facility to independent retailers in Germany in October, allowing stores to accept orders from Zalando customers and fulfil them from their stores. Zalando is expanding its warehouse facilities in Europe and visibly stepped up its advertising presence in the UK this year, so it is still very much one to watch.
