Doug Murray has grown South African retailer The Foschini Group’s influence over the UK high street considerably overthe past couple of years.

After buying Phase Eight in 2015, the group acquired Whistles for an undisclosed sum in March this year. Whistles suffered a pre-tax loss of £15.5m in the year before it was taken over by The Foschini Group, and Jane Shepherdson announced her departure as chief executive of the womenswear chain in September.

But its senior team (number 83) have painted an improving picture since, and sales at Phase Eight have been strong since its acquisition – up 24% for the 14 months to 2 April. There is ample growth potential in both for Murray, who became CEO in 2008 after 22 years at the company.
