Alibaba-owned ecommerce platform Tmall has a whopping 76.6% share of China’s online fashion market. Laura Ashley and Boden opened stores on the site during 2016 and, with its London office just over a year old, Alibaba looks set to continue its focus on UK brands in the future.
Alibaba’s annual shopping event, Singles’ Day on 11 November, also continues to be a dominant force in the Chinese consumer calendar, generating sales in 2015 that were bigger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
The 2016 event shattered previous records, generating $5bn (£4bn) of sales in the first hour of trading alone. UK brands such as New Look and Topshop benefited from the rush.
