Drapers Top 100 2016 – 18. Sir Philip Green, chairman, Arcadia Group

Philip green

2016 was one of the most challenging years in Sir Philip Green’s 39-year career, as the fallout from the BHS collapse reverberated around the industry. The press took great pleasure in documenting his downfall from the shining knight of British retail to the front-page fixture the tabloids dubbed “Sir Shifty”, pictured aboard his £100m yacht.

His public image became marred following his appearance before MPs in parliament in summer. The question of what will happen with the £571m BHS pension deficit still hangs over him. The effect on his Arcadia Group retail empire is yet to be fully revealed, but it must be taking its toll. Nonetheless, the international expansion of Topshop and Topman is continuing apace with new standalone stores in Germany, while the Outfit fascia is also gaining traction in the UK, but he has delayed publication of Arcadia’s most recent financial results, so we do not know how the wider group has been performing.
