The Hargreaves family is a powerful force within the fashion industry, controlling Matalan, Wolsey, Fenn Wright Mason and Nicole Farhi. It has been a mixed bag for the group’s brands this year. Menswear brand Wolsey, which is owned by Matalan founder John Hargreaves’ son, Jamey, announced it will stop wholesaling its main collection from spring 18. Sales fell by 37% to £3.7m in what it described as a “challenging” year.
It s been a happier story over at Matalan, which has seen both full-price sales and profits surge this year. Chief executive Jason Hargreaves (Jamey’s brother) has pointed to improvements in the retailer’s range, store estate and to strong growth online, which he attributed to the introduction of next day click-and-collect.
